 What is a modem ?

A modem is a hardware device that converts data from digital format, intended for communication directly between devices with specialized wiring, into one suitable for a transmission medium such as telephone lines or radio. A modem modulates one or more carrier wave signals to encode digital information for transmission, and demodulates signals to decode the transmitted information. A mo-dem is also called modulator and demodulator, mo is called modulator and dem is called demodulator.

How a modem works ?

Let's consider a computer A and another computer B. If you wan't to send messages from computer A to computer B or computer B to computer A then you require a medium which is provided by aor telephone cables, a message from computer A to reach Computer B through a series of connections. Our message will travel from computer A to telephone A and the telephone A will send the message to telephone B and then to computer B but there is a problem in this serial connection. If we type Hello, how are you then the computer will send this in the format of 01010110101 signals which is the binary signal to the telephone and the telephone doesn't understands the binary language it only understands the analog signals and computer does't understands analog signals, so for this we need a translator, a black box named modulator. It receives the binary language and converts that into analog signals so that the telephone can understand that but now the telephone A will send those analog signals to the telephone B and the telephone B will send those analog signals to computer B but computer cannot understand analog signals, so now we need another box to be placed between telephone B and computer B named demodulator, it will convert the analog signals to binary language and then sends that to computer B. But now, if computer B wants to send message to computer A then we need to place another modulator near the demodulator and a demodulator near the modulator, as shown in the following picture.  

Now, the problem has been solved. Both the computers can communicate with each other. As the time passed, the modulator and demodulator were combined to form modem.
